Any idea about M2 MBA performance for Ableton?

In order of preference for me, it was Saturn > IRDX > Amp sim every single time. I didn't expect that at all because I was blown away the first time I tried IRDX when demoing the MLC Subzero plugin, but good to know that Saturn (which I already own) will effectively accomplish the same goal with better results for my taste. I've already started using this in a couple of projects and it works great - thanks for the trick!

James, thanks for such an elegant and clear review. The MOST OBVIOUS way to test IRDX Core is to use it with BLUNTSTATIC sources - meaning, not even a guitar to begin with, but a pure mono sustained saw wave or similarly generated tone from a retro computer/console like one of the Plogue chipsynths: hold down a sustained note, then move the IRDX Core knob around. You'll DEFINITELY hear a difference of how it "excites" the higher frequencies and subtle dynamics movement. Let that be your benchmark.

Quote from audio plugin developer: "Logic automatically increases its secondary mixing buffer when under load. Ableton does not change anything, it just starts crackling (buffer xrunning)". Logic uses the same engine as other "non-live" daw. So Apple are just lazy assholes who dgaf about their own product.

Very helpful because I need to upgrade from my I9 MBP. Since the M3 Pro Max has 10 Performance Cores and 4 Efficiency Cores, I should get better results when using Pro Tools?

This is absolutely ridiculous! (Not your test or results, but Apple's decision to have its own software fail to take advantage of its own computer's efficiency cores!) If Apple itself will not generate software to run on efficiency cores, why would any other developer do so? And why sell us computers that are "more powerful" only to find out they actually are not unless the software is developed in a very specific way?

I think there is a mistake in your MetaData example (5:17) - ISRC needs to have "=" after it and not a "|". Am I right about this?

James - I believe Avid released changes with its March 2024 Pro Tools release (v. 2024.3) that were designed to use the efficiency cores of the M chips. A more recent June release carried that forward. Please update your information with at least a comment, or even better, update the video test with an epilogue or onscreen comment. Thanks

What is Apple thinking? Makes no sense. Also they need Logic to take advantage of the GPU power of the Mac Studio

M1 and Apple story is like that of the cars. First they were fully able to make very reliable cars, but then due to the fear of giving consumers very high quality products and customers not buying soon enough again, they reduced the relibility of the cars. Apple did same, once they realize that they gave the market a very good chip 4-5 years ahead of time, they are oh wow lets mint these idiots and give them the new tech drop by drop and just keep them thirsty. looking at price vs time of release, M3 are nothing for the value of money of what M1 was years ago. Especially considering the competition.

Just reminding.. It is propably said here in video, but just to looking at the charts wont tell you the whole truth. M2 pro 16-inch has 12 cores and 8 performance cores.. So these comparisons are not valid if you change from 14-to 16inch. (As you should always, if doing anything related music and such) Also the singlecore performance is very crusial. The overload comes usually from one channel witch is packed with plugins - not the track count. And that is series processed, not paralled. So multicore performance cannot be used as it is single core process. Therefore in real life scenario the M2 is faster. Also not to mention M3 which can most definately be faster if you choose Max version!

I just opened a "real world" session randomly and looked at the CPU usage and it basically used a lot more of the efficiency cores than your example, so I'm not sure your selection of plugin doesn't matter.

Volume normalisation turn them off cuz ofcourse degrade sound quality and loudness 😂

Why didn’t you assess the M2 pro 12 core? Has 8 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores? Would perform better than M1 Pro with 10 core.

Hi james. Do you think new CPUs (Qualcom Snapdragon X Elite and Intel Lunar Lake) that eliminates hyperthreads, taking as a priority single cores instead of Multi-cores, would present better results for DAWs performance in terms of more channels with more plugins?
